Manchester United’s transfer budget has received a boost of approximately €12 million following the confirmation of Mason Greenwood’s permanent move from Marseille to Fenerbahce. The deal was officially announced by Marseille on Wednesday, bringing an end to Greenwood’s two-year spell with the Ligue 1 club.
United have been active in the transfer market this summer, already securing the signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Karl Darlow. Manager Erik ten Hag is aiming to further strengthen the squad, particularly in midfield, at full-back, and on the wings, and the additional funds will be welcomed. The club had hoped for a larger windfall, but the sell-on clause has still proven lucrative.
Greenwood initially left Manchester United in the summer of 2024 after charges of attempted rape and assault, which he denied, were dropped in February 2023. He was sold to Marseille for a fee of €26 million, but United negotiated a sell-on clause ranging from 40-50% of any future transfer fee. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United will receive a portion of Marseille’s profit, totaling just over €12 million, while The Athletic reports the figure could be between €12-13 million.
Greenwood’s departure from Marseille was marked by criticism regarding his attitude and performance. Reports from the French media highlighted a perceived lack of effort and a negative body language, leading to him being dropped from the starting lineup at times. La Provence newspaper notably gave him a rating of 0/10 after a defeat to Nantes, heavily criticizing his lack of commitment and unprofessional behavior. Despite finishing as Marseille’s top scorer for the season, his exit is not expected to be mourned by the club’s supporters.
Greenwood’s move to Fenerbahce represents a new chapter in his career, while Manchester United will benefit financially from the deal, providing additional resources for their ongoing squad rebuild. The transfer allows both clubs to move forward, albeit under different circumstances and with varying degrees of satisfaction.
