Inter Milan are planning significant changes to their midfield under manager Cristian Chivu, aiming to address perceived shortcomings in physicality and pace that hindered their Champions League progress, according to reports in Italy. Despite reaching the Champions League final last season, the Nerazzurri reportedly lacked the intensity to consistently match European powerhouses like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Chivu, who took the managerial reins, envisions a tactical shift from the traditional 3-5-2 formation to a more dynamic 3-4-2-1 system. This change would necessitate the addition of players capable of thriving in a more vertical and less structured approach. Last summer, the club identified Moussa Koné of Al-Ahli as their primary target to provide that physicality in midfield, but a deal was blocked by Roma’s ownership.
Despite continuing with the 3-5-2 that secured a Serie A and Coppa Italia double, Chivu and the club haven’t abandoned their ambition to reshape the squad. Koné remains a key target, recognized as a regular starter for the French national team under Didier Deschamps. Liverpool’s Curtis Jones has also emerged as a potential addition, offering the high-energy style associated with the Premier League. Jones’ arrival could provide the versatility that Simone Frattesi has not consistently delivered this season.
The club also retains a long-term interest in Nico Paz, currently at Real Madrid, but his availability depends on the plans of manager José Mourinho. Koné is considered the priority for strengthening the midfield, with Jones as a potential alternative. Both players could adapt to the 3-5-2 formation, with Jones potentially more suited to a three-man midfield. The additions would complement existing stars Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolò Barella, with Piotr Zielinski and Antonín Sucic providing further depth. Koné could allow Calhanoglu more freedom, while Jones could feature as an attacking midfielder, enabling Chivu to rotate Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram effectively.
