Jadon Sancho completes permanent return to Borussia Dortmund
Jadon Sancho has completed a permanent transfer from Manchester United to Borussia Dortmund for a reported £25 million fee, reuniting with the Bundesliga club where he previously starred between 2017-2021. The 24-year-old winger has signed a four-year contract through June 2028 after Dortmund negotiated a reduced fee following his successful loan spell last season.
Sancho returns to Germany after an underwhelming three-year stint at Old Trafford where he scored just 12 goals in 82 appearances. The England international had been frozen out of United's first-team plans following a public falling out with manager Erik ten Hag in September 2023, leading to his January loan return to Dortmund. During his temporary spell, Sancho registered three goals and two assists in 21 appearances, helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final.
The deal represents a significant financial loss for United, who paid £73 million to sign Sancho in 2021, but provides crucial funds for their summer rebuild under new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. For Dortmund, the permanent acquisition secures a proven attacking threat as they seek to replace the departed Marco Reus and potentially offset the expected exit of Donyell Malen.
Sancho's return to Westfalenstadion reunites him with coach Edin Terzić, who previously oversaw his development during their 2020-21 DFB-Pokal winning campaign. The move allows the London-born forward to rebuild his career in a familiar environment ahead of Euro 2024, having been excluded from England's squad since 2023.
