John Smith completes £15m transfer from United City to FC Metropolis
FC Metropolis have completed the signing of midfielder John Smith from United City for a reported £15m fee, finalising a three-year contract with the Ligue 1 club.
The 27-year-old passed his medical on Thursday morning before putting pen to paper at the Stade Lumière. The deal includes an option for an additional year, with United City securing a 15% sell-on clause for any future transfer.
Smith becomes Metropolis' first major summer signing as manager Pierre Leclerc seeks to bolster his midfield options following last season's sixth-place finish. The English midfielder scored eight goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions last campaign, helping United City secure Europa Conference League qualification.
United City's sporting director confirmed the sale enables reinvestment in their squad ahead of their Premier League return after a two-year absence. Smith's departure follows weeks of negotiations between the clubs, with personal terms agreed last weekend.
The move reunites Smith with former United City coach Mark Thompson, now serving as Metropolis' assistant manager. Sources close to the player suggest family connections in southern France also influenced his decision to pursue the transfer.
