Juventus Complete €25m Signing of Torino Defender Buongiorno
Juventus have signed Italian defender Alessandro Buongiorno from city rivals Torino in a deal worth €25m plus add-ons, finalizing the center-back's move to Serie A's third-place finishers. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract through 2029 after completing medical tests on Thursday.
Torino will receive an initial €25m with performance-related bonuses potentially raising the total fee to €30m. Buongiorno becomes Juventus' fourth summer signing as new manager Thiago Motta reshapes the squad, following confirmed deals for Michele Di Gregorio, Khephren Thuram, and Douglas Luiz.
The Italy international captained Torino last season, making 35 league appearances and helping his boyhood club achieve their best defensive record in 15 years. His aerial dominance and progressive passing attracted Juventus' attention as they seek to replace the departing Alex Sandro and add homegrown talent to their backline.
For Torino, the sale represents their largest outgoing transfer fee since selling Andrea Belotti in 2017. Club president Urbano Cairo had initially demanded €40m but compromised as Buongiorno pushed for the move. Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli described the signing as "strategic for both present and future" given the player's age and Serie A experience.
The transfer marks the first direct move between the Turin rivals since 1995, when Torino sold midfielder Luca Fusi to Juventus. Buongiorno is expected to compete with Gleison Bremer and Federico Gatti for a starting position when Juventus begin their Serie A campaign at home to Como on August 17.
