Ajax have contacted representatives for Julian Brandt to explore the possibility of signing the attacking midfielder on a free transfer, according to WAZ. The enquiry comes just five days before Brandt’s contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire.
Brandt is currently available without a transfer fee after failing to agree to an extension with Dortmund, where he has spent the last four seasons. The 28-year-old initially joined the Bundesliga side from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, becoming a key component of their attacking setup. He has made 170 appearances for Dortmund across all competitions, contributing 49 goals and 58 assists.
WAZ reports that Ajax are assessing Brandt’s interest in a move to the Eredivisie, but it remains unclear whether the player is receptive to joining the Dutch club. Financial terms are also yet to be discussed, with the report suggesting Ajax will need to convince Brandt with their salary offer.
Interest in Brandt extends beyond the Netherlands, with the player reportedly in discussions with clubs in Italy and Spain. Leeds United, Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and AS Roma have all been previously linked with a move for the German international. Brandt’s versatility – capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, winger, or even a second striker – makes him an attractive option for several clubs across Europe.
Brandt enjoyed a productive season with Dortmund, playing a crucial role in their Champions League campaign and contributing significantly to their Bundesliga form. He finished the season with 12 goals and 18 assists across all competitions. His departure from Dortmund creates a void in their midfield, while his arrival at Ajax could significantly bolster their attacking options as they look to challenge for the Eredivisie title next season.
