Barcelona president Joan Laporta has expressed confidence that the club will be active in the summer transfer window, despite recently seeing Robert Lewandowski depart as a free agent. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, as reported by Sport, Laporta indicated the club is prepared to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Laporta reflected positively on the recently concluded campaign, in which Barcelona retained their La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles, though they missed out on Champions League qualification. He highlighted the strong team spirit and the work of sporting director Deco and incoming manager Hansi Flick, anticipating a more challenging season ahead with increased demands.
Lewandowski announced his departure from Barcelona over the weekend when his contract expires next month, bringing an end to his two-year spell at the Camp Nou. Laporta was quick to praise the Polish striker’s contribution, stating Lewandowski “is already part of the Barça crest” and expressing gratitude for his impact both on and off the pitch, particularly during a difficult period for the club. He noted Lewandowski’s arrival helped restore sporting and economic credibility.
When questioned about finding a replacement for Lewandowski, Laporta deferred to Deco, suggesting discussions regarding potential targets like Julián Álvarez should be directed to the sporting director. He reiterated the club’s intention to sign players who will enhance their competitiveness, stating, “We will be able to sign what we think we should sign to be more competitive.”
Barcelona will be looking to build on their domestic success and return to prominence in European competition. The departure of a key player like Lewandowski necessitates investment in the attacking department, and Laporta’s comments suggest the club is prepared to make those investments. The appointment of Flick as manager signals a new era, and securing the right reinforcements will be crucial for his success.
