Arsenal have emerged as strong contenders to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with reports suggesting the Gunners are prepared to make a significant offer for the Brazilian international. According to journalist Lee Ryder of The Chronicle, there are ‘growing fears’ at Newcastle that Guimaraes could be their next high-profile departure.
Arsenal have already seen a ‘verbal offer’ of £45million rejected for the 28-year-old, but believe a bid of £65million may be sufficient to secure his services, particularly as Guimaraes enters the final two years of his current contract. The player is reportedly open to a move, with concerns about the direction of the Newcastle project influencing his thinking.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and quickly established himself as a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield, even becoming captain. He has made 68 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists. Last season, he played a crucial role in Newcastle’s Champions League qualification.
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reports that Arsenal have held extensive talks with Guimaraes’ representatives, receiving a positive response from the player’s side. Manchester City have also been long-term admirers of Guimaraes, having previously considered a move before his transfer to Newcastle. However, Newcastle are currently maintaining a firm stance, with sources close to the club indicating that no player will be allowed to leave without their approval.
While the club acknowledges the speculation, they are attempting to convince Guimaraes to commit his future to St James’ Park by outlining their ambitious plans for the upcoming season. The potential loss of both Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, who is the subject of a £90million bid from Tottenham Hotspur, would represent a significant blow to Newcastle’s squad depth and ambitions. Tonali has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Spurs.
Securing Guimaraes would provide Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta with a dynamic and technically gifted midfielder to bolster his options. The Gunners are actively strengthening their squad ahead of another push for the Premier League title.
