RB Leipzig are considering an approach for RCD Mallorca manager Martin Demichelis, with a reported release clause of €2.5 million in his current contract, according to Sky Germany. The Bundesliga club are evaluating potential replacements for Ole Werner, whose position as head coach is under increasing pressure despite having only completed one full season in charge.
Demichelis, 45, took over at Mallorca mid-season and has overseen a relatively mixed period, securing five wins, three draws, and four defeats in 12 La Liga matches. Prior to joining Mallorca, Demichelis managed Argentinian side River Plate, where he won the Argentine Cup in 2023. His managerial career began with Bayern Munich II, serving as their reserve team coach.
Sky Germany reports that while Leipzig view Demichelis as their primary candidate should they choose to part ways with Werner, a deal is not yet advanced and negotiations are ongoing. The release clause has not been triggered at this stage, but remains a key factor in any potential move. Werner’s future at the Saxony club remains uncertain, with club chiefs reportedly scrutinizing his performance.
Leipzig currently sit in fourth place in the Bundesliga table, but have been inconsistent in recent weeks, leading to questions about Werner’s tactical approach and ability to consistently deliver results. The Red Bull-backed club have a history of making swift changes in the managerial position, prioritizing a proactive and high-intensity style of play. Demichelis’s emphasis on tactical flexibility and development of young players could align with Leipzig’s long-term ambitions.
Should Leipzig activate Demichelis’s release clause, it would represent a significant investment in a coach with growing reputation in European football. The appointment could signal a shift in strategy for the club, potentially focusing on a more long-term project under a manager with experience in developing talent.
