Bayer Leverkusen are planning to sell at least one of their central midfielders during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a report from Kicker.de. The Bundesliga champions boast a wealth of options in midfield, and the club is expected to streamline the squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
While Exequiel Palacios is considered the most secure starter in the defensive midfield position, his compatriot Equi Fernández has emerged as the most likely candidate to depart. The 24-year-old’s recent behaviour has reportedly impacted his standing within the team, following an incident during the 1-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Fernández reportedly refused to enter the field as a late substitute in Dortmund, a move intended to run down the clock, and this has jeopardised his position at the BayArena. Signed from Defensa y Justicia in January 2023, Fernández has made 53 appearances for Leverkusen, contributing with two goals and five assists. He was a regular feature in Xabi Alonso’s title-winning side, playing 26 times in the Bundesliga this season.
Aleix Garcia is also a potential departure, though Leverkusen are expected to demand a substantial offer for the Spaniard. Garcia, who joined Leverkusen from Girona last summer, quickly established himself as a key player, making 31 league appearances and providing eight assists. His departure would likely hinge on a bid that the club deems too good to refuse.
Further complicating matters is the situation surrounding Malik Tillman. Tillman had previously expressed a desire to leave the club under former coach Xabi Alonso, and it remains to be seen how his role will evolve under new head coach Gerardo Martinez. Premier League side Fulham have reportedly shown interest in the USA international, and a sale could be considered if Leverkusen receive an acceptable offer. Tillman joined Leverkusen from Bayern Munich last summer but has only made 16 Bundesliga appearances, scoring one goal.
The planned midfield shake-up suggests Leverkusen are preparing to reinvest in the area, potentially seeking to add further quality and depth to maintain their dominance in the Bundesliga and compete effectively in the Champions League.
