Inter Milan are accelerating their interest in Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence, with the aim of securing his signature during the current transfer window, according to reports in Italy. The Nerazzurri are looking to strengthen their options at right-back and view the 23-year-old as a suitable addition to their squad.
Spence spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Genoa, where he made six appearances under coach Alberto Gilardino. He has also featured for England at youth levels, becoming the first Muslim player to represent the national team. While currently participating in the FIFA World Cup, Inter are hoping to finalize a deal swiftly after his tournament concludes.
The Serie A club initially considered other options, including Fabrizio Palestra and Daniel Khalaili, but those pursuits have stalled for differing reasons. Guéla Doué of Strasbourg remains on their shortlist, but Spence is believed to be a more attainable target. The potential cost of Spence is estimated to be around €30 million, reflecting his current market value at Tottenham.
Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022, but he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. He made 44 appearances in total for the club last season, starting 32 matches, including eight in the Champions League, where he featured in both legs of the round of 16 tie. With Pedro Porro established as the first-choice right-back at Tottenham, a return to Italy could appeal to Spence as an opportunity for more consistent playing time. Inter are hoping to have a new right-back in place for coach Simone Inzaghi during the team’s pre-season training camp in Germany, though the timing is contingent on Spence’s involvement in the latter stages of the World Cup. Securing Spence would provide competition and depth in a key position for the upcoming season, potentially bolstering Inter’s challenge for both domestic and European honours.
