Liverpool have reached an agreement with Jarell Quansah regarding personal terms, paving the way for a potential return to Anfield, according to reports from the Liverpool Echo. The club holds a €64 million (£55m) buy-back clause following the centre-back’s transfer to Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
Liverpool experienced defensive vulnerabilities throughout the previous Premier League season, with key players Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate facing inconsistent form and injuries to Geovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez further compounding the issue. With Konate set to depart this summer, manager Andoni Iraola is seeking to bolster the team’s depth in central defence.
Quansah departed Liverpool seeking more consistent first-team opportunities, a desire he articulated in April, stating he “just wanted to play” and felt capable of performing at the highest level. He highlighted the appeal of the Bundesliga and Champions League football as key factors in his decision to move to Leverkusen.
The agreement allows Liverpool to swiftly complete the transfer should they choose, providing Iraola and the club’s recruitment team with flexibility as the summer transfer window progresses. Quansah’s versatility is also seen as a significant asset, with the 23-year-old capable of playing both centre-back and right-back.
Data from SciSports suggests that Quansah would currently rank as Liverpool’s fourth-best centre-back, behind Konate, Van Dijk, and Gomez. This potentially limits his immediate role to a rotation option, which may not align with his desire for regular playing time. As a result, the club may consider delaying the activation of the buy-back clause until 2027, when Van Dijk’s contract expires, allowing Quansah to further develop in Germany.
Liverpool are also reportedly in advanced talks with Blackburn Rovers’ Patrik Farkas, who previously played for the club, and he is expected to be Iraola’s first signing. However, Quansah remains a viable option as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
