Liverpool confirm Mohamed Salah departure at end of season
Liverpool have announced forward Mohamed Salah will leave the club when his contract expires this summer, ending a seven-year stay at Anfield. The 31-year-old’s departure was confirmed via an official club statement on Friday, though his next destination remains undisclosed.
Salah joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for £34m and became one of the Premier League’s most prolific attackers. He scored 210 goals in 346 appearances, winning seven major trophies including the Champions League and Premier League. His final match for the Reds will be against Wolves on 19 May.
The Egyptian international’s exit follows manager Jürgen Klopp’s impending departure, signaling a transformative period for the club. Liverpool’s statement described Salah as having "etched his name into club history" but did not address replacement plans. According to The Athletic, Saudi Pro League clubs showed strong interest in Salah last summer, with Al-Ittihad reportedly offering £150m, but no formal bids have emerged this year.
Salah’s production dipped slightly this season with 18 league goals compared to 19 last campaign, though he remains Liverpool’s top scorer. His departure leaves a significant gap in attack, with Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota likely to assume greater responsibility. The club are expected to enter the transfer market for reinforcements.
While no successor has been named, transfer targets reportedly include Bayern Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus according to Sky Sports. Salah’s legacy as Liverpool’s all-time leading Premier League scorer (155 goals) and three-time Golden Boot winner ensures his status as a modern Anfield icon.
