Manchester United are increasingly confident of securing a deal to bring Mateus Fernandes to Old Trafford, according to sources close to the player’s representatives. The 21-year-old midfielder currently plays for West Ham United, who were recently relegated from the Premier League.
United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is reportedly keen for the club’s new owners, INEOS, to pursue Fernandes, alongside Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde. This comes as United prepare for midfield departures, with Casemiro expected to leave and Manuel Ugarte potentially following suit this summer. The club has already agreed a deal to sign Ederson Silva from Atalanta.
TEAMtalk’s Fraser Fletcher reported in May that United were interested in a summer move for Fernandes, and had already made contact with his agents. Sources indicated at the time that Fernandes himself was ‘extremely keen’ on joining the Red Devils. However, West Ham are seeking a fee of £80million for the Portugal international, reflecting his potential despite their relegation.
Journalist Shaun Connolly reported on X that talks are ongoing and representatives remain optimistic about a deal, noting that Fernandes is “really admired” by many at Old Trafford. Vivell is also reportedly advocating for the signing of Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, though a deal for the Spanish left-back is not expected until 2026. Bayern Munich’s interest in another United target, Nathaniel Brown of Eintracht Frankfurt, could complicate matters.
Meanwhile, reports suggesting a move for Marcus Rashford to Bayern Munich have been dismissed by Bild journalist Christian Falk, who states Bayern are not prioritizing the United forward due to his high salary demands. The potential arrival of Fernandes would add depth and creativity to United’s midfield as they look to rebuild under Erik ten Hag.
