Manchester United are continuing their summer overhaul under Michael Carrick, with a £60 million move for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall emerging as a priority, according to reports. This comes after the club secured deals for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans, signalling a significant investment in the midfield.
The pursuit of Hall, 21, is driven by Carrick’s desire to provide competition for Luke Shaw at left-back. United are confident Hall is keen on a move to Old Trafford, despite his family ties to Newcastle, and the opportunity to play Champions League football is a major draw. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde is considered a backup option should Hall remain at St. James’ Park.
United initially targeted Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes before a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson fell through due to a failed medical. The quick acquisition of Santos for £50 million and Tielemans, activated through a £35 million release clause in his Aston Villa contract, demonstrated a swift response to that setback.
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, journalist David Ornstein outlined the type of midfielder Carrick is now seeking, suggesting a player with “legs” to complement the ball-playing abilities of Mainoo, Santos, and Tielemans. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is a player admired by the INEOS ownership, though the Cherries are currently unwilling to sell. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has also been mentioned as a potential alternative.
Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams has also emerged as a potential target, with the player reportedly open to a move to United despite previously playing for rivals Liverpool. However, Forest are expected to offer Williams a new contract in an attempt to retain his services, while Newcastle have also expressed interest.
These signings indicate a clear strategy from Carrick and INEOS to rebuild the United squad with a focus on both quality and depth, aiming to challenge for top honours in the Premier League and beyond.
