Manchester United are potentially set to revisit their agreement with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, despite recently pulling out of a €45 million deal, according to multiple reports from David Ornstein, Ben Jacobs, and Sky Sports.
An initial financial package had been agreed with Atalanta last month for the Brazil international, who was also previously linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. United had been tracking the 27-year-old since 2024, viewing him as a long-term target, but requested a delay in the transfer until after the World Cup.
The delay was prompted by a knee issue discovered during medical examinations, with United seeking a specialist’s opinion on potential long-term damage. Following these examinations, the club decided to terminate the deal, opting instead to sign Chelsea’s Andrey Santos as their first midfield addition under Michael Carrick, with Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans also expected to join.
However, United still believe they require a player of Ederson’s profile in midfield, and neither Santos nor Tielemans are considered direct replacements. The club have not entirely dismissed the possibility of returning for Ederson later in the transfer window. Atalanta have maintained the player is currently fully fit, though United were concerned about the possibility of future complications arising from the knee problem.
Atalanta’s negotiating position may be weakened by Ederson’s contract situation, which is set to expire next year. The midfielder is reportedly keen to progress his career, making a contract extension unlikely. This could force Atalanta to consider a reduced fee to avoid losing him for free in 2027. While the transfer is currently off, a renegotiated deal could still see Ederson move to Old Trafford.
