Manchester United are prepared to invest up to £100 million in two new midfielders after accepting defeat in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, according to reports. The Red Devils had identified Anderson as a key target but have now shifted their focus to alternatives following a competing offer from Manchester City, reportedly worth £121 million with add-ons.
United have already secured the signing of Atalanta’s Ederson Silva this summer, but manager Michael Carrick is keen to further strengthen the midfield options. The club is now prioritizing West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes, Carlos Baleba of Brighton & Hove Albion, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as potential recruits. While an initial bid for Fernandes is expected to be rejected, sources indicate United are confident of eventually securing his signature.
The shift in focus comes after former Manchester United forward Michael Owen publicly advocated for the signing of Fernandes. Owen, speaking to The Metro, highlighted Fernandes’s qualities and suitability for the team, stating he is “exactly what they need.” He also noted Fernandes’s age as a positive, suggesting he could form a strong partnership with Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. Owen believes West Ham’s relegation to the Championship increases the likelihood of Fernandes being available.
United’s spending plans are contingent on a potential departure of Manuel Ugarte, which would free up additional funds. The club’s decision to redistribute the funds initially allocated for Anderson demonstrates their commitment to reinforcing the midfield area. This summer’s transfer activity reflects INEOS’s plan to bolster the squad with multiple additions, following their recent investment in the club. The acquisition of Fernandes, Baleba, or Scott would provide Carrick with greater depth and competition in midfield as United prepare for the upcoming season.
