Manchester United’s interest in AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone could significantly impact Celtic’s summer transfer window, according to reports. The Red Devils are seeking a third midfield addition following the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, having previously targeted Atalanta’s Ederson before he renewed his contract with the Italian club.
United have been linked with several players, including Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin, but have now made contact with representatives for Kone. The 25-year-old France international is available for discussions after his nation’s recent World Cup third-place playoff match against England, and negotiations could progress quickly. Roma are reportedly prepared to sell Kone for a fee exceeding €50 million to balance their finances.
Should United successfully acquire Kone, Roma will need to find a replacement in midfield. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Celtic’s Arne Engels has emerged as a key target for the Serie A club. Roma view the 22-year-old Belgian as an affordable option, valuing him between €20 million and €25 million.
However, Celtic are believed to be reluctant to sell Engels for less than €30 million, having previously rejected offers in that range during the January transfer window. Engels is reportedly eager to advance his career, with Roma facing competition from Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who showed interest in January, as well as Brazilian club Botafogo and Marseille for his signature.
While Kone remains a Roma player, no concrete movement on Engels is expected until United’s pursuit of the French midfielder intensifies. The potential transfer of Kone to Old Trafford could therefore set off a chain reaction, leading to Engels’ possible departure from Celtic.
