Milan are considering Ramon Planes as an alternative to Ralf Rangnick in their search for a new manager, according to reports emerging from Madrid. Planes became available on June 1st following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad, where he had been employed since January 2024.
Planes’ departure from Al Ittihad came after the club’s expectations were not met, prompting the Spaniard to seek a return to European football. He previously held a lengthy and varied career in football administration, making him an attractive candidate for Milan’s ownership group, led by Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. His versatility allows him to fill multiple roles within a club structure, which is reportedly appealing to the Milan hierarchy.
Prior to his move to Saudi Arabia, Planes gained recognition for his work at Espanyol, where he was instrumental in securing the loan signing of Philippe Coutinho. He also held a significant position at Barcelona, playing a key role in the acquisitions of players such as Pedro and Ronald Araujo. These successes demonstrate his ability to identify and recruit talent, a skill that would be valuable to Milan as they look to rebuild their squad.
Further enhancing his credentials, Planes maintains strong relationships with several high-profile managers, including Mauricio Pochettino, who is also among the candidates being considered for the Milan job. This existing network could prove beneficial in attracting a top-level manager to the club, should Planes be appointed to a directorial role. The club has not yet confirmed any official approach or negotiations with Planes.
The potential appointment of Planes could signal a shift in Milan’s managerial strategy, potentially favouring a more collaborative approach between a sporting director and a head coach. This move could provide stability and a clear long-term vision for the club as they aim to return to the top of Serie A.
