Mohamed Salah to Leave Liverpool at End of 2025-26 Season
Mohamed Salah will depart Liverpool when his contract expires in June 2026, ending a nine-year stay at Anfield after the club and player mutually agreed to terminate his deal one year early. The 33-year-old confirmed his decision via a social media video on Monday, with Liverpool later issuing an official statement acknowledging the conclusion of his £340,000-per-week contract originally set to run until 2027.
Salah, who joined from Roma in 2017 for £36.9 million, leaves as Liverpool’s third-highest all-time scorer with 255 goals. The Egyptian forward won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, and six domestic cups during his tenure, earning four Golden Boot awards. His departure follows a challenging season for both player and club, with Liverpool currently outside the Premier League’s top four.
While Salah’s next destination remains unconfirmed, sources close to the situation indicate the Saudi Pro League remains the most likely option. Major League Soccer clubs, including the Chicago Fire who explored a move in 2025, are also monitoring his availability. European sides may still enter the race despite Salah’s recent dip in form, with the forward netting 12 goals in 28 league appearances this campaign.
Liverpool’s statement emphasized Salah’s legacy, noting he ‘will go down as one of the greatest players in our history.’ The announcement allows supporters to prepare for his farewell during Liverpool’s final home match against Aston Villa on May 17. Salah stressed his immediate focus remains on securing Champions League qualification, with the Reds trailing fourth-placed Tottenham by five points with eight games remaining.
