Manchester United have been alerted to the possibility of signing Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, with reports suggesting the Blues have significantly reduced their asking price to £80 million. This represents a £70 million decrease from the reported £150 million valuation held last summer.
Palmer experienced a somewhat inconsistent 2023-24 season with Chelsea, hampered by injuries and a dip in form, ultimately finishing with 11 goals and three assists in 34 appearances. Despite this, he remains a highly-regarded talent, having won the PFA Young Player of the Year award after his arrival from Manchester City. Chelsea are reportedly looking to raise funds for new signings under incoming manager Xabi Alonso and may need to sell key players to balance the books.
United’s interest stems from Palmer’s upbringing as a supporter of the club and a potential long-term replacement for Bruno Fernandes. Sources indicated in January that Palmer was open to discussing a move to Old Trafford, with doubts about his future at Chelsea. United were previously deterred by Chelsea’s higher asking price, but the reduced fee could prompt a renewed approach.
While Palmer initially dismissed speculation regarding a return to Manchester in April, Chelsea’s failure to qualify for European competition may alter his perspective. Michael Carrick’s appointment as permanent manager at United could also be a significant factor, with the club appearing to be on an upward trajectory. The Sun report that Chelsea 'have to cash in on a big-name star' to fund Alonso’s desired squad overhaul.
Although United are also considering other options, such as Morgan Rogers, Palmer remains a key target. Chelsea have previously adopted a firm ‘not for sale’ stance, but the financial realities at Stamford Bridge could force a change in strategy. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will accept an £80 million offer, but the situation has undoubtedly shifted in United’s favour.
