RB Leipzig confirm signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach captain Rocco Reitz
RB Leipzig have announced the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach captain Rocco Reitz on a permanent deal, with the midfielder set to join the Bundesliga side this summer. The 23-year-old has signed a contract through 2029 and becomes Leipzig's first major acquisition ahead of the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports Germany reports Leipzig will pay around €20m for the German youth international, making him Gladbach's most expensive academy graduate sale in club history. Reitz, who has started 25 Bundesliga matches this season while wearing the captain's armband on multiple occasions, will remain with his boyhood club until the end of the current campaign to aid their relegation battle. Gladbach sit 12th in the table, four points above the playoff spot.
Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer called Reitz the club's "absolute priority" for the defensive midfield position, citing his "significant development potential" in an official statement. The player reached the 2024 U21 European Championship final with Germany and trained with the senior squad ahead of Euro 2024, though he did not make the final tournament roster.
For Gladbach, the transfer represents a club-record fee received for a homegrown player, with sporting director Rouven Schröder acknowledging the financial significance. Leipzig view Reitz as a long-term solution to strengthen their midfield core following recent departures of key players to rival clubs.
