Real Madrid are increasingly likely to miss out on signing Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez this summer, with the player nearing a contract extension with the Premier League club.
Madrid identified Rodri as a key target to bolster their midfield following Toni Kroos’s retirement, initially targeting him last summer. However, a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained by the player delayed any potential move. The Spanish giants have been monitoring his recovery closely this season, but have now seemingly cooled their interest.
According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, Manchester City are close to agreeing a new deal with Rodri before the upcoming World Cup. Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, with City determined to retain the services of the influential midfielder for the foreseeable future. Moretto also reports that Real Madrid have not made any official contact with Manchester City regarding a transfer for Rodri, further solidifying the likelihood of him staying at the Etihad Stadium.
Real Madrid’s need for midfield reinforcement stems from difficulties in replacing the departed Kroos, with Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, and Jude Bellingham all having been deployed in the role. Several players have been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, including Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, and AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit, but the club has yet to settle on a specific target. Securing a suitable replacement for Kroos remains a priority for the club as they look to maintain their dominance in both La Liga and European competition.
Rodri’s potential contract extension represents a significant boost for Manchester City, securing a vital component of their midfield for years to come. His continued presence will be crucial as City aim to build on their recent successes and compete for further silverware.
