Manchester United have confirmed that Jadon Sancho will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month, alongside Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia. The announcement was made as part of the club’s retained list publication on June 10th, 2026.
Sancho arrived at Old Trafford in 2021 for a fee of €85 million from Borussia Dortmund, but departs without making a significant impact, having played 83 times across all competitions and scoring 12 goals with 6 assists. This equates to over €1 million spent per appearance for the club. His final season at Dortmund prior to the move saw him score 16 goals and provide 20 assists, highlighting a stark contrast in form.
Sancho’s time at United was hampered by various issues, beginning with an ear infection upon arrival. His first Premier League goal didn’t come until November, after which manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked. The relationship with Erik ten Hag deteriorated further, culminating in Sancho publicly stating he was being used as a “scapegoat” in September 2023 and subsequently being frozen out of the squad. He later joined Borussia Dortmund on loan, but did not feature for United again.
Prior to his departure, there were accusations of unprofessionalism surrounding Sancho, including concerns about his fitness and late-night habits. He has also previously taken time away from the game to address his mental health. Despite the difficulties, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick believes Sancho still possesses considerable talent, noting his ability on the ball and creativity, and referencing a successful loan spell at Dortmund and appearance in the Champions League final.
Sancho is now a free agent, and his next move remains uncertain. While he has demonstrated quality in the past, rebuilding his career will require resilience and a return to the form that once marked him as a rising star. The departure marks a significant financial loss for Manchester United, and a cautionary tale of a high-profile transfer that failed to deliver on its promise.
