Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos has completed a €56.3 million move to Manchester United, officially confirmed on Saturday. The transfer marks a significant investment by United as they look to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season.
Santos, 18, joined Chelsea in January 2023 from Vasco da Gama, but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino. He made limited appearances for the Blues, spending time on loan at Strasbourg to gain more consistent playing time. Despite his potential, Chelsea appear willing to part ways with the Brazilian talent, reportedly seeing the fee as a strong return on investment.
Manchester United have been actively seeking midfield reinforcements this summer, and manager Erik ten Hag identified Santos as a key target. The move addresses a perceived need for creativity and dynamism in the centre of the pitch. United have also agreed deals for Karl Darlow, though their pursuit of Ederson has fallen through.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Angus Gunn has moved to San Jose Earthquakes on a free transfer, while Ipswich Town’s Cieran Slicker has joined Barnsley on loan. Bournemouth’s Alex Jimenez has moved to Fiorentina on loan.
Across Europe, several other deals were finalized today. Antoine Griezmann and Robert Lewandowski have both departed from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona respectively, joining MLS sides Orlando City and Chicago Fire on free transfers. La Liga also saw Brais Mendez move from Real Sociedad to Columbus Crew for €6 million, and Jonathan Asp Jensen transfer from Bayern to Deportivo la Coruna for €6 million. In Germany, Kjell Watjen moved from Borussia Dortmund to Midtjylland for €2.5m, and Martin Adeline joined Hamburg from Troyes for €4m. Ligue 1 saw Thorgan Hazard join RC Lens on a free transfer, and Vincent Sasso move to Le Havre.
The summer transfer window continues to be a period of significant activity across Europe’s top five leagues, with clubs vying to strengthen their squads before the start of the upcoming seasons.
