Norwegian forward Andreas Schjelderup has turned down a new contract with Benfica, reportedly to facilitate a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool among the clubs showing interest, according to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha via Sport Witness. The 22-year-old impressed at the recent World Cup, notably scoring against England in the quarter-final, despite Norway’s eventual defeat.
Benfica had initially valued Schjelderup at €40 million (£34m) prior to the tournament, but have since increased their asking price to €50 million (£43m) following his performances. The Portuguese club attempted to secure the player’s future with a three-year contract extension, but Schjelderup rejected the offer, signalling his desire to join a top English club.
Liverpool identified Schjelderup as a potential wide player after failing to secure the signing of Ivorian Yan Diomande, who ultimately preferred a move to Paris Saint-Germain. However, the potential acquisition of Schjelderup may not be a perfect fit, as he primarily plays off the left wing, a position already occupied by recent signings Victor Munoz and Cody Gakpo.
Separately, Liverpool have also made contact with Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, as reported by Brazilian outlet Globo. Gomes was previously linked with a move to Atletico Madrid for €45 million (£38m), but the deal collapsed due to complications in negotiations with his agent, Jorge Mendes. The Brazilian is reportedly keen to leave Wolves as the club face potential relegation to the Championship. Liverpool could face competition from Manchester United for Gomes, as well as Roma’s Manu Kone, with both clubs also monitoring the situation.
Alexis Mac Allister, when questioned about Liverpool’s interest in Mexican talent Gilberto Mora, responded cautiously, stating he hadn’t seen any reports and emphasized the importance of respecting both the player and his current club. Mac Allister acknowledged that if Liverpool are interested, Mora “will surely be a great player.”
