AC Milan retain a potential pathway to re-sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, but the transfer is being complicated by ongoing instability within the Italian club’s leadership structure, according to TEAMtalk.
The Italy international reportedly prefers a return to the Rossoneri should he depart St James’ Park, however, the lack of appointments for a sporting director and head coach is causing concern among those close to the player.
Milan’s owners, RedBird, are currently undertaking a significant overhaul of the club’s hierarchy following a disappointing season that resulted in missing out on Champions League qualification, with several key figures having already departed.
While senior advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains involved, and Massimo Calvelli is expected to serve as interim CEO, no permanent replacements have been confirmed, and the decision-making process is proving protracted. Former Barcelona sporting director Ramon Planes and Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick are among the candidates being considered.
The managerial search is also unresolved, with Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino and Arne Slot all having been discussed as potential appointments. This uncertainty is impacting Milan’s transfer planning, with Tonali a key target.
Newcastle United are not expected to allow Tonali to leave for a reduced fee, valuing the midfielder at around £100million. Milan are exploring potential deal structures that would leverage existing financial arrangements between the clubs relating to previous transfers involving Tonali and Malick Thiaw, potentially reducing the immediate cash outlay.
Interest in Tonali extends beyond Italy, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all maintaining contact, but the prevailing belief is that Tonali would favour a return to Serie A if a suitable offer emerges. However, Milan must resolve its internal issues to capitalise on this.
Tonali himself is currently focused on his preparations for the upcoming season, and would be willing to remain at Newcastle if a move to Milan does not materialise.
