Manchester United are preparing to make an offer for RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare, according to reports in French media. The move comes as United reassess their midfield options following difficulties in securing a deal for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, with Forest reportedly demanding £130 million for the England international.
United had identified Anderson as a primary target, but have now turned their attention to alternatives, including West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes and Sangare. FootMercato journalist Sebastien Denis reported on Tuesday that United have been impressed by the 23-year-old Mali international and are formulating a bid. While over a dozen clubs are said to be monitoring Sangare, United are the first to move towards a formal offer.
Sangare joined RC Lens from SK Rapid Wien in the summer of 2025 and has become a key player for the Ligue 1 side. Last season, he scored three goals and provided four assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. He also featured for Mali at the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Interest in Sangare is not new for United, with journalist Dean Jones reporting in December 2025 that the club were already tracking his performances. Jones highlighted Sangare’s physical attributes and technical ability as potentially well-suited to the Premier League. Journalist Bence Bocsak further praised Sangare’s dynamism, energy, and ability to cover ground, describing him as a “nightmare to play against” and a player who could “thrive in the Premier League.” Bocsak specifically noted his pressing ability, interception skills, and vertical passing range.
RC Lens currently value Sangare at €40 million, though it is anticipated that any successful bid from United will exceed that figure. The potential arrival of Sangare would further strengthen United’s midfield options ahead of the new season, providing competition and depth in a crucial area of the pitch.
